South Western Spice Mix

external-file_edited.jpg

Making your own South Western spice mix allows you to control the amount of salt in your dish. You can also alter the heat level by increasing the amounts of ancho chili and cayenne pepper spices. I also add arrowroot or corn starch as a thickening agent that helps to create a sauce.

4 Tbsp of chili powder

4 Tbsp of arrowroot or corn starch

2 Tbsp of ground cumin

2 Tbsp of Montreal steak seasoning

1 Tbsp of smoked paprika

2 tsp of garlic powder

2 tsp of onion powder

2 tsp of ground coriander

2 tsp of Mexican oregano (optional)

1/2 tsp of cayenne pepper

1/2 tsp of ground ancho chili

Mix all the spices together and store in an air tight jar. I add this to ground turkey, beef, chicken and/or vegetables one tablespoon at a time and taste and adjust accordingly. I also add chicken or vegetable stock if I want it to have a sauce.
