A Note Before You Start
I started with Tonia’s (a contributor to the website) recipe from Feasting at Home site. I increased the orange zest to 2 tsp and used a combination of whole milk and half and half. I omitted the allspice and cardamom as I didn’t have either.
Ingredients
16 oz loaf of Challah Bread
4 large eggs
½ cup of half and half
½ cup of whole milk
3 TBSP of real maple syrup
2 tsp of orange zest
¼ tsp of salt
Preparation
Step 1:
Whisk all of the ingredients together and pour into a shallow container. A rectangular pyrex works well as you can dip several pieces of bread at once.
Step 2:
Prepare your griddle or skillet by heating it on medium heat for a skillet and at 375 for an electric griddle. Once hot, add 2 tsp of butter, and spread evenly across the pan. Reduce the heat just a bit once the butter has melted.
Step 3:
Dip the bread slices into the custard being careful not to let it absorb too much custard. Flip to the other side and then place on the skillet.
Step 4:
Cook approximately 3 minutes each side. Serve immediately, or place in a casserole dish, cover with foil and keep warm in a 250 degree pre-heated oven.
